Cultivating Personal Power and Agility to Evolve through Adversity

When I was advocating resilience skills, resilient leadership, and a resilient mindset nine or ten years ago, my heartfelt pleas fell on deaf ears… UNLESS the brave listener had experienced adversity or trauma in their past; then they were the ones who got it.

Definition of Resiliency

re·sil·iency [ri-ˈzil-yən(t)-sē, -zil-ee-uhn-sē] noun

The capacity to adapt, withstand, rebound, and transform (if necessary) in response to, or in anticipation of, disruptive events of all types and magnitude

These days, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has not been impacted by the numerous potentially traumatic events (PTE’s) in the world over the past 12 months. Now resilience is trendy, and urgent. The problem is, building resilience during adversity is the hard part. There is so much more to the Road to Resilience.

The Road to Resiliency is a Way of Life

Resilience is a common enough term, but it is not well understood and there is even less clarity on how to actually have it. As someone who has lived through several traumas and tragedies, I have been passionate about replacing old, outdated survival strategies with healthy, sustainable resilience strategies. And healing old emotional pain in the process. I guide clients through the process I’ve refined, so they can relax and enjoy life fully, knowing they are resourceful and able to thrive through any hardship or trauma.

Introducing Advanced Self-Resiliency

The fact is, there is a preventative element to resilience, and an after-the-fact element. Most of what you see in the marketplace on how to create resilience is mindset training, which when done well can significantly empower someone, but when done poorly, provides nothing more than intellectual head knowledge about the subject without the full body ‘knowing’ or experiential implementation.

This leaves a brave soul with an inner conflict thinking all they have to do is bounce back from the setback quickly, but not really knowing how to do that nor believing they can.

The Realms of Resiliency

Advanced Self-Resiliency is a process of nurturing and developing one’s strengths in the emotional & relational area, the mental acuity & beliefs area, the physical & material area, and the spiritual & soul realm.

Emotional & Relational Realm

Developing emotional mastery and healthy relationships; knowing how to set boundaries and how to ask for help and get support; identify and apply the personal growth opportunity (and healing) in the PTE.

Mental Acuity & Mindset REALM

Developing the skillsets of mindfulness and stillness, as well as focus and intention; Learning the steps to embrace change, and art of letting go; Practicing adaptability and flexibility as a behaviour to be stretched into; Learning the process for rebounding from setback and hardship.

SPIRITUAL & SOUL VIEW REALM

Identifying and staying connected to your soul purpose and life purpose; Trusting your inner knowing and intuitive guidance in the calm moments as well as in the chaotic moments; Seeing the unfolding experiences from the Soul View; Restoring personal power.

PHYSICAL & MATERIAL REALM

Cultivating inner safety and security regardless of external events; Maintaining fitness and good health; Keeping one’s energy levels full with self-care, rest and rejuvenation routines; Being crystal clear on one’s needs and how to get them met; And establishing the material needs in life, including buffers for emergency times.

The Road to Resiliency happens Before, During and After

The road to resiliency is a way of life, with two distinct lanes: one that focuses on preparation and the other that focuses on response-ability and growth. You can switch lanes, as needed, and sometimes "take the road" by straddling both lanes.

Two Lanes:

Resiliency Preparation

There are specific skills and practices that can be developed when life is relatively calm… the preventative measures that reduce the impact of PTE’s. These abilities develop a person’s solid foundation, so that they are less affected by sudden change and adversity.

Resiliency Growth

Learning how to grow personally from challenges and setbacks is the key ingredient of building self-resiliency that most resilience frameworks miss and, that will skyrocket your inner strength and confidence to withstand any PTE.

It’s Always a Growth Opportunity

No matter how tragic, how devastating, or how painful, every PTE is a growth opportunity. Cultivating the ability to mine the experience for the gold, in the form of growth opportunities, and then to grow and heal through it, is the key to the self-resiliency needed in this fast-paced, ever-changing, and unpredictable world we live in today. The principles of intentional Post Traumatic Growth (iPTG) are foundations of this process.

Once the basic system for Evolving Through AdversityTM is learned, the first step is to use it to grow from your oldest wounds and traumas. Next, you learn to apply the system to recent adversities, so that you can capture the growth opportunity as soon as possible after the crisis is over. And the most sophisticated step is to learn how to grow through the opportunity while you are in the challenging experience. This is Advanced Resilience.
